Orange Farm - JETP

What is the community about?

Orange farm is the poor of the poorest communities in the whole of the sub region G ...the population of Orange farm is above 1.3 million. And the rate of unemployment is insane,Many house have teenage headed families. Many kids never got the chance to finish school due to that.

In Orange farm we have kids that love to play sport but there's no one who is incouraging and sponsoring them. Most of youth of Orange farm are substances abusers(drugs and alcohol)

We differ by extentions ,other extention are better than the other when it comes to service development,we see tar roads on some areas and some do not have.It is not easy to leave in Orange farm in this Economic.

Orange farm ward1 is a diverse community Where we are still struggling with a lot of infrastructures. A community of too much unemployment rate and crime rate. Where the youth are more into drugs and alcohol more than anything. Teenage pregnancy at a high rate. A community that is Isolated from other communities. Stated as a danger zone

We have less of oparations and providing of services within our community.
We do have organisations which implement in tutoring other students. health care, child care, social services, crime prevention, community improvement and sports.
As a community forum we have less funding and support from the local government.

Services or Operations We Deliver

Sisonke deals with fighting for service delivery and evictions, especially evictions of children when their parents are no longer around and people want to sell their houses.

We also aim to fight for better education,” said Twala. The organisation works hand-in-hand with organisations that fight for socialism and want to change the world.
“We work with United Front, Gauteng Housing Crisis Community, the Department of Health in vaccinations and Sanca [South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence] on issues of drugs.”

Sisonke also hosts community meetings every Thursday at 14:00 pm to discuss issues. Some of their achievements include reversing 4 cases of eviction in Orange Farm. “We had challenged 4 cases of eviction and assisted and defended those families and until now they still live there.”

The Benefits

The benefits are to better the lives of our people within the community. Some of this organisations, create employment for our people even though it is not enough for all.

The organisation works hard to get the community active and do as many workshops as possible to get them to understand the difference between a community organisation and economic and political parties. As a participant of the recently past Winter school, Mokoena brings what she has learnt and picked up into her community and organisation.

Problem Solved / Challenges

Few projects have came into the community but some have left without being complete and not satisfying the need of the people.
